NBCC Awards Student Scholarships
March 15, 2012NBCC Foundation Awards 2011 Military and Rural Scholarships
GREENSBORO, NC/ February 2012—The NBCC Foundation recently selected 10 recipients for its military and rural scholarships. Recipients will be awarded scholarships of $3,000 to support their counseling education and to recognize their commitment to providing counseling services to underserved populations.
The goal of the scholarships is to increase the number of counselors in the areas where they are needed most. To qualify, scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a CACREP-accredited master’s-level counseling program and must have demonstrated great promise and potential as future counselors.
The rural scholarship was established to create more counseling services for rural communities, which suffer disproportionately from a lack of mental health services. Recipients of this scholarship are committed to meeting this need in their hometown or another rural area. The 2011 recipients are Ms. Paula D. Davis of Waynesboro, Mississippi; Ms. Katherine J.H. Failing of Indianola, Mississippi; Ms. Tara M. Jackson of Durango, Colorado; Ms. Anna L. Kirkley of Jackson, Missouri; and Ms. Lee L. Lapham of Martin, Michigan.
The military scholarship was created to increase the number of counselors available to serve military personnel and veterans. Recipients of this scholarship are dedicated to helping their fellow men and women in uniform, and the 2011 recipients represent four of the five branches of military service. They are Ms. Sybil J. Allison of San Antonio, Texas; Ms. Shannon E. Ayres of Wilmington, Delaware; Mr. Jeffrey K. Hensley of Frisco, Texas; Mr. Aaron J. Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Mr. Craig A. Wells of Six Mile, South Carolina.
The NBCC Foundation is an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), based in Greensboro, North Carolina.
