This CACREP accredited program prepares graduates for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) which is essential for employment in the mental health field and private practice. Students who take at least 6 credits per semester receive a 25% tuition award. Students may complete the Master’s of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program within 2 years or also have the option of completing the program on a part-time basis. Classes are held during weeknights. Graduates of the program are very successful in obtaining employment in mental health settings, working as out- and in-patient therapists, mobile therapists, substance abuse counselors, etc.

25% Tuition Award: The Duquesne University School of Education is committed to assisting our students financially. The School of Education offers all students pursuing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program a 25% tuition award for semesters in which students complete 6 or more credits

Accreditation: Accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Some states require graduation from a CACREP accredited program to obtain Licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC)

Licensure and Certification: Graduates of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program satisfy the academic requirements for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and for National Counseling Certification (NCC)

Time to Degree: Earning your Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling can be completed within two (2) years by taking 9-12 credits per semester

Full-time and Part-time options: Students have the option to complete the program on a full-, half-, or part-time basis if desired

No Pre-requisites: This program accepts students with Bachelor’s degrees in a variety of areas. There are no undergraduate pre-requisites, other than having a Bachelor’s degree

Small to Moderate Class Sizes: Classes typically range from 6-25 students and are conveniently held in the evenings allowing students to remain employed during the day

Variety of Fieldwork Options: Students have the opportunity to experience a variety of mental health agencies for fieldwork

Large Alumni Base: As a graduate of this program, you will be amongst the 1200 alumni who are leaving an impression on the field of mental health as leaders and innovators

Skill Development: In this program you develop the therapeutic skills and techniques to identify and work with issues such as: serious mental illness,divorce, or violence; identify risk factors and create plans to manage risk; and apply essential counseling skills to prevent and intervene ethically.

Program History

The Community Counseling program was initially accredited in April 1993 and has maintained its accreditation. In July 2014, the Community Counseling program was converted to a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. The program converted their Community Counseling program to a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program in accordance with CACREP Accreditation Maintenance Policy #8 - Converting a CACREP-accredited Community Counseling Program to a CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program.
