What is CACREP?

CACREP is an independent agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit master's degree programs in:

  • addiction counseling
  • career counseling
  • clinical mental health counseling
  • marriage, couple, and family counseling
  • school counseling
  • student affairs and college counseling

CACREP also accredits doctoral programs in:

  • Counselor Education and Supervision

New Tri-Care Regulations Will Require CACREP

Mental Health Counselors allowed to practice independently under Tri-Care On December 27, the Department of Defense released its requirements for independent practice for Mental Health Counselors under the Tri-Care System which serves more than 9 million military families and retirees. The new requirements include graduation from a CACREP accredited MHC or CMHC program. There is a grandfathering period which runs from now until December 31, 2014, which provides an alternative pathway, but starting January 1, 2015, all Mental Health Counselors hired through Tri-Care must be graduates of CACREP-accredited programs. read more>
