What is CACREP?
CACREP is an independent agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit master's degree programs in:
- addiction counseling
- career counseling
- clinical mental health counseling
- marriage, couple, and family counseling
- school counseling
- student affairs and college counseling
CACREP also accredits doctoral programs in:
- Counselor Education and Supervision
This website is provided as a service to students who are looking for a counseling degree progam and to educators and practitioners interested in what it means to be a CACREP accredited program.

CACREP Announces Faculty RFP for Research on Current Issues
As a result of the recent TRICARE legislation, there has been growing interest in counseling programs pursuing CACREP accreditation as well as professional dialogue as to why counseling programs should apply for CACREP accreditation. CACREP is soliciting research proposals from counseling program faculty that focus on the benefits of and barriers to CACREP accreditation, as well as other current issues. read more>
CACREP Releases Merger Documents
The CACREP Board voted to release the archival documents relating to the failed 2007 Merger with the Council for Rehabilitation Education (CORE). read more>
New Tri-Care Regulations Will Require CACREP
Mental Health Counselors allowed to practice independently under Tri-Care On December 27, the Department of Defense released its requirements for independent practice for Mental Health Counselors under the Tri-Care System which serves more than 9 million military families and retirees. The new requirements include graduation from a CACREP accredited MHC or CMHC program. There is a grandfathering period which runs from now until December 31, 2014, which provides an alternative pathway, but starting January 1, 2015, all Mental Health Counselors hired through Tri-Care must be graduates of CACREP-accredited programs. read more>
