The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program in Counseling at The University of Memphis serves as a realistic and ethical professional point of entry for individuals from diverse populations interested in acquiring the requisite skills associated with becoming a professional counselor. The Masters program (M.S.) is pedagogically formulated for individuals whose career interests include clinical mental health counselor preparation and subsequent employment in clinical mental health agencies, private practice, and not for profit organizations. The mission of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program faculty is the preparing of counselors who will ethically promote the well- being of individuals, families, mental health organizations and communities located in metropolitan, rural and global settings.
Graduates of the M.S. degree program (Clinical Mental Health Counseling) are prepared to assume entry level counseling positions in clinical mental health environments. Individuals admitted into the program will learn in an environment created to afford students opportunities to achieve academic, professional, and personnel success. Program faculty adhere to the belief that demonstrated potential to become a counselor prior to being admitted to the Mental Health Counseling program coupled with demonstrated effectiveness as a counselor in training while completing the program are characteristics each program applicant must possess. The program requires completion of a minimum of sixty (60) graduate hours of academic coursework, which includes the successful completion of a practicum (3 graduate hours/150 clock hours) an internship (9 graduate hours/600 clock hours) and successfully passing a comprehensive examination.

Program History
The Community Counseling program was initially accredited in November 1994 and maintained its accreditation. It became a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program in July 2011. The institution was originally called Memphis State University . The name was changed in 1994.
