The Community Counseling program at S.U. is a 60 credit-hour program that is registered in NY as leading to licensure as a mental health counselor. The degree title, therefore, is Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC). The program has a strong social justice agenda that includes curriculum designed to assist students in meeting the counseling challenges and opportunities with diverse clients and communities. Among new courses that have been added to its curriculum is a skills building course specifically to assist students working with diverse populations. S.U. is situated in a moderately sized city; therefore, students have an opportunity to complete practicum and internship placements in urban settings. Students in the CMHC program are enhanced by the professional mentoring of faculty as well as doctoral students preparing to become senior clinicians or counselor educators. The Department hosts an active chapter of Chi Sigma Iota that offers students additional professional development opportunities as well as social and networking opportunities. Because of its renown as an international university, Syracuse draws both domestic and international students, thus adding another level of student diversity. Please note that this program is currently accredited as a Community Counseling program.
