Our doctoral program in counselor education is a practitioner based program that gives students a range of choices in developing expertise in counseling specialty areas of their choice. Both course and field experiences focus on areas such as alcohol and drug, marriage and family, crisis intervention, child and adolescent, school, mental health, rehabilitation and multicultural counseling. Field experiences are tied to those concentation areas and our large urban enviroment enables students to do internships with our state mental hospital , local mental health clinics, Memphis City and Shelby County schools, the Memphis Police Department, the Memphis VA and private clinics and hospitals. Students may also choose a teaching course of studes that will allow them to gain expertise as a counselor educator. Dissertations are typically action oriented research field projects that focus on the student’s area of interest and are supported by porfessors who are practicing in that field of endeavor.
