California State University Northridge

CSUN’s Marriage and Family Therapy program meets the criteria to prepare students for licensure as an MFT in CA. With our updated curriculum, we will be ready for the 2012 revisions to the CA BBS licensure standards thanks to our faculty team, lead by Professor Diane Gehart, who is collaborating to make the updates required. We have a long-time CACREP approved program that has field opportunities that include the Valley Trauma Center and the campus-based Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic. Our students have had high success at passing the MFT exams and we have a supportive, caring environment that embraces diversity of all sorts.

Program History

Two M.A. programs - School Counseling and Counseling in Community and Other Agency Settings were accredited by the California ACES in 1979.  These programs were reviewed and accepted into CACREP accreditation in Fall of 1981 when CACREP was founded.  The CCOAS program was actually titled Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, but was accredited under CCOAS Standards since CACREP did not have MFC program area standards at that time.  The program applied for accreditation as a Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy program and was granted accreditation in November 1994.
