University of Lynchburg

This program is designed to provide schools with highly skilled specialists in counseling. The School Counseling program students are prepared to meet the K-12 guidelines required by the Virginia Department of Education.

Special emphasis is placed on counseling, consultation skills, guidance curriculum development, and the coordination of guidance program components. At the elementary school level, counselors develop skills for meeting the needs of young children. Strategies for developing programs that are infused into the total educational process and serve the total school community are emphasized. Professional preparation for middle and high school counselors focuses on the unique needs of these students. The school counselor must have skills in working with groups, functioning as a school team member, and consulting with teachers and parents, as well as providing career development experiences, and assisting students in meeting developmental challenges and decisions.
